Businesses of all sizes need to establish a safe workplace for a variety of reasons.  In today's competitive business enironment, safety can mean the difference between financial success and bankruptcy.  Injuries, high insurance premiums, lawsuits and fines from OSHA violations can all be avoided by developing and implementing good safety management practices.

Safety Solutions assists clients in developing proven cost-effective management programs to reduce losses, increase profitability and comply with OSHA regulations.  We recognize that OSHA compliance is very important, but our experience has also told us that most businesses must go well beyond compliance in order to achieve excellence in loss control.  For example, a typical company's uninsured property/equipment damage and business interruption costs (e.g. unscheduled equipment down time) exceed its workers' compensation costs by anywhere from 5 to 50 times!  Many of these uninsured losses don't result in employee injuries/illnesses and are therefore not governed by OSHA regulations.

We work closely with our clients to design comprehensive written programs to meet the client's specific needs.  We have extensive knowledge and experience in performing loss control management audits to identify areas of improvement that make good business sense.  We also have expertise in conducting investigations of major and minor incidents and performing OSHA-type facility inspections.

Consultant Qualifications:

Craig S. Ried, P.E., CSP is President of Safety Solutions, Inc.  He brings with him a combined 24+ years of experience in health and safety management, engineering design and project management.

Mr. Ried has performed safety work in a wide variety of business environments including refineries, mining operations, ships, retail service stations, chemical plants, pipeline operations, offshore platforms, health care facilities, building construction, insurance industry, laboratories, electronics manufacturing and office buildings.  While consulting with the largest physician practice management company in the United States, he worked as the Acting Loss Prevention Manager and developed safety-related policies and procedures for a major hospital.  Some of these included a chemical procurement procedure, lockout/tagout policy and an investigation report for hazardous materials spills.  He also led the client's first major incident investigation team.  The investigation resulted in a technical report with a detailed description of the facts, causes and recommendations to prevent similar incidents from occuring in the future.

Mr. Ried has worked with numerous building contractors to identify and implement programs to improve controls over liability losses (construction quality as well as safety issues).  The work has been done on behalf of a nationwide general liability insurance carrier.  The initial surveys of the operations resulted in detailed reports that provided the insurance underwriters with the necessary information to determine if a policy, with coverage of up to $5 million, should be written.

Mr. Ried has developed planned inspection programs (safety inspection) for various clients' operations. The programs include detailed written procedures that describe who would conduct the inspections, what would be inspected and the frequency of the inspections.  He has also developed written follow-up procedures for the corrective actions and a database to track the corrective actions to completion.

Prior to consulting, Mr. Ried served as Sr. Advisor of Audits and Investigations for a major energy company.  He directed a loss control management audit program that resulted in an improvement in program implementation of over 70% in six years while reducing serious injury/illness frequency rates by over 50%.  He personally conducted over 70 loss control management audits throughout the company.  He also worked with a 45-person multi-discipline team and performed a comprehensive two-month compliance audit of the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (T.A.P.S.) at the request of the owner companies.  In addition,  Mr. Ried investigated and prepared detailed investigation reports for 17 major/serious incidents with losses of up to $16 million.  He also coordinated the safety efforts of a large gulf coast refinery by serving as Fire, Safety and Security Supervisor.

Mr. Ried has extensive safety and health training.  He keeps up-to-date with the latest trends and developments through regular training seminars and conferences.  Some of these include:

          -  OSHA Voluntary Compliance in Safety and Health - Federal OSHA

Mr. Ried holds a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University.  He is a registered Professional Engineer, Certified Safety Professional and a professional member of the American Society of Safety Engineers.
